Angelica Kauffmann
Until 30th June 2024
From March 1st, the Royal Academy in London will be holding an exhibition on one of their founding members, Angelica Kauffmann. The exhibition will follow the life and work of this remarkable artist, who defied gender norms in order to gain fame in the male-dominated art world of the 18th century.
Having worked in both London and Rome, the exhibition will focus on different locations and sets of paintings, including her self-portraits, the ceiling paintings created for the Royal Academy’s first home in Somerset House, and those created later in her career from her studio near the Spanish Steps in Rome. Paintings by contemporaries of Kauffmann, such as Johann Zoffany, will also be on display.
You can find works by Kauffmann and other women Old Masters previously with Philip Mould in our Picture Archive.
When: From 28th February until 30th June 2024.
Where: Royal Academy of Arts, London.
Tickets: From £15. Visit the Royal Academy’s website to book your tickets.
Black Tudors: New Narratives
Until 22nd March 2024
The current display at Selly House Manor Museum, Black Tudors: New Narratives, centres around works based on the lives of Black Tudors, produced by four young Black artists, Annie Pearson, Nompumelelo Ncube, Jade Enyon, and Nina Simone-Brown. The works, which are displayed within the 500-year-old Tudor Manor, previously home to George Cadbury - have been created in response to research done by Dr Miranda Kaufmann, for her book Black Tudors.
Louise Deakin, Heritage Engagement Officer at the museum, explains: ‘I started to think about how Selly Manor could be a great backdrop to bring these Black Tudors to life. I wanted to share their stories, but also provide visual representations.’
When: From 26th January until 22nd March 2024, with a special tour of the exhibition on Saturday 16th March.
Where: Selly House Manor Museum, Bournville
Tickets: From £4. Visit the Selly House Manor’s website to book your tickets.
