This book shines a light on a painter known only as the ‘Master of the Countess of Warwick’. Active in Elizabethan England and providing a link between Hans Holbein the Younger (d.1543) and Nicholas Hilliard (c.1547-1619), the Master of the Countess of Warwick created portraits in which sitters are distinguished by their stiff deportment, softly modelled faces and beautifully detailed outfits. Highlighting recent research into the painter’s identity and presenting many works in colour for the first time, this catalogue provides an engaging introduction to a fascinating and little-studied period in British art history.
