Isaac Oliver
The Rest on the Flight into Egypt
Ahead of our upcoming winter exhibition Miniatures from the Bearsted Collection, the gallery is delighted to be presenting an exceptionally rare cabinet miniature by Peter Oliver — The Rest on the Flight into Egypt — at Frieze Masters.
This early example of a cabinet miniature depicting a history scene is among the most important works by the artist to appear on the market in recent years. Known in two versions, our miniature was likely kept by Oliver himself, while the other is recorded as having been in the collection of Charles I and is now held by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Dr. Sophie Rhodes has worked closely with us to study this remarkable work in greater depth, examining the origins of cabinet miniatures in England and how Peter Oliver expanded the possibilities of the genre. Watch the below 'in-conversation' between Sophie and our Director Lawrence Hendra to find out more.
