Nicola Matteis and Mary Beale

Baroque music at the gallery with Classic FM

During our major exhibition Fruit of Friendship: Portraits by Mary Beale, we had the pleasure of listening to recorder virtuoso Olwen Foulkes‬ play Nicola Matteis' (1650-1714) vivacious 'Ground after the Scotch Humour', accompanied by ‪Jonatan Bougt‬ (guitar) and ‪Harry Buckoke‬ (viola da gamba). Born in Naples, Matteis became a popular composer in 1670s London, renowned for his variations on 'grounds' - repeated bass lines, typical of the Baroque era.
