Eileen Mayo, Tirzah Garwood, and Ithell Colquhoun were three extraordinary artists who carved a unique path in 20th-century British art, challenging conventions and expanding the boundaries of their respective mediums. This month, you can view their works in exhibitions across the UK.
Ithell Colquhoun: Between Worlds
Until 5th May 2025
Ithell Colquhoun (1906-1988) played a crucial role in British Surrealism throughout the 1930s and 1940s. A visionary writer and practicing occultist, she forged her own creative path by experimenting with surrealist techniques of unconscious image-making and boldly engaging with themes of myth and magic.
This major exhibition brings together over 200 works and archival materials, tracing Colquhoun’s artistic journey from her early works as a student and surrealist influences to her later explorations of sexuality, ecology, and esoteric traditions. The exhibition culminates in a dedicated space showcasing her interpretation of the Tarot deck, a striking synthesis of her artistic and mystical pursuits.

Tirzah Garwood: Beyond Ravilious
Until 26th May 2025
The Dulwich Picture Gallery is currently hosting the first major exhibition dedicated to artist and designer Tirzah Garwood (1908–1951). Though often recognized as the wife of Eric Ravilious, Garwood was a remarkable artist in her own right, excelling in fine art and printmaking. This retrospective is the first to present the full scope of her work, bringing together over 80 pieces that showcase her distinctive ‘sophisticated naïve’ style—where seemingly charming subjects reveal deeper, often subversive themes.
The exhibition features nearly all of her surviving oil paintings, alongside wood engravings, pencil drawings, experimental marbled papers, and intricate collages. Also on display are 11 works by Eric Ravilious, offering insight into the artistic connections and contrasts between the two.
Where: Dulwich Picture Gallery.
When: From 19 November 2024 until 26 May 2025.
