Francis Bacon: Human Presence

Exhibiting over 50 artworks by the Irish-born artist from the 1940s onwards, Francis Bacon: Human Presence explores how Bacon redefined the genre of portraiture, capturing the raw emotions of the human psyche in his paintings.

Bacon's pictures are commonly characterised through his use of distorted and isolated figures depicted in triptychs that are often juxtaposed with religious symbolism. Among those exhibited, there are portraits of Bacon's close artistic circle, such as Lucien Freud and Isabel Rawsthorne, and of romantic partners like Peter Lacy and George Dyer.

It also highlights the profound impact their works had on the emerging talent of Raphael.

Among the highlights are some of the greatest Italian Renaissance drawings, including Leonardo’s iconic Burlington House Cartoon and preparatory sketches by both Leonardo and Michelangelo for the monumental murals commissioned for the council hall of the Palazzo Vecchio.

When: Now until the 16th of February 2025.
Where: The Royal Academy, Piccadilly, London.
