Henry Moore: Shadows on the Wall

Until 22nd September 2024

Early in the Second World War, the public sought refuge from German Air Force bomb raids in the London Underground. Moved by the experience, English sculptor Henry Moore (1898 – 1986) describes the scenes he witnessed in what are known and celebrated as the Shelter Drawings.

The Courtauld Gallery's Shadows on the Wall explores Moore’s fascination with the spatial and human drama of which he encountered whilst taking refuge in the shelters. The drawings on display reflect Moore’s interest in rendering the textures, volume, and mass of the brick walls that surround him, and suggest a new way to interpret many of his most innovative Post-War sculpture.

When: From 8th June to 22nd September 2024.

Where: The Courtauld Gallery, London.

Jesse Jones: Mirror Martyr Mirror Moon

Until 8th September 2024

In celebration of the National Gallery’s Bicentenary, Ikon Gallery presents Self Portrait as Saint Catherine of Alexandria (c. 1615 – 17) by the Italian Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi alongside a solo exhibition by Irish contemporary artist Jesse Jones.

Created as a direct response to Gentileschi’s masterpiece, Jesse Jones’ solo show Mirror Martyr Mirror Moon, considers art history, cinema, feminism, ritual and healing, presenting multiple interconnected archetypes of feminist resistance. Employing the use of film, performance and installation, Jones transforms Ikon’s gallery space to afford audiences with an opportunity to “encounter” Gentileschi’s self-portrait through sound and architectural interventions.

When: From 10th May to 8th September 2024

Where: Ikon Gallery, Birmingham.

Tickets: Free to all.
