Ellie Smith and Lucy West on Mary Beale

London Art Week | 25th of April 2024

To accompany the opening of our forthcoming exhibition, Fruit of Friendship: Portraits by Mary Beale, our Researcher and Exhibitions Coordinator Ellie Smith was in coversation with Lucy West, Assistant Curator at the Dulwich Picture Gallery about the remarkable 17th century artist Mary Beale (1633-1699).

West curated the exhibition Mary Beale: Experimetal Srecrets at the Dulwich Picture Gallery last year, where Beale occupies an important position as the only historic woman painter in their collection. The exhibition brought about new research, shedding new light on Beale's painting tehniques and the dynamics within her studio.

The conversation was organised by London Art Week and was mediated by Christopher Baker, Editor of The Burlington Magazine.
