Understanding British Portraits Annual Seminar With a focus on Sarah Biffin

October 24, 2023

This year’s Understanding British Portraits Annual Seminar took place at London's National Portrait Gallery today, chaired by Oli McCall, Senior Curator at Compton Verney Art Gallery & Park.

Our Exhibitions Coordinator & Reseracher Ellie Smith, alongside Emma Rutherford, presented a paper on the miniaturist Sarah Biffin and the exhibition on this artist which we held at the gallery last year, "Without Hands": The Art of Sarah Biffin. Since this exhibition took place, Biffin has received enormous attention, with most of our works by the artist currently on loan at the Holburne Museum in Bath for their Sarah Biffin exhibition, and with her two latest recorded self-portraits having recently joined  the collection of the South West Heritage Trust and The Baltimore Museum of Art.
