Fake or Fortune? Series 11, Episode 2

October 3, 2023

Could there be a hidden mystery beneath the brushstrokes of a painting described as 'in the style of Sir Joshua Reynolds'?

In Episode 2 of Fake or Fortune? Series Eleven, Philip and Fiona meet Glyn Hopkin, a car dealer who took a gamble on a painting he hopes is by Sir Joshua Reynolds. If authentic, the painting, bought by Hopkin for £2,700, could have a potential value of £100,000.

A plaque on the bottom of the frame reads 'Puck,' a character from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Reynolds famously painted Puck, and Glyn’s artwork resembles the authentic piece.

Glyn decides to send the painting to restorer Simon Gillespie to see if the layers of overpaint can be removed, which leads to a dramatic discovery... Will it be a Reynolds?
