Gwen John: Art and Life in London and Paris
From 13th May until 8th October 2023
Curated by Dr Alicia Foster in association with Pallant House Gallery, this exhibition aims to rewrite the story of Gwen John (1876–1939) and bring attention to the ways she has been misrepresented for decades as a recluse as well as overshadowed by her famous brother Augustus and labelled as the mistress of Auguste Rodin.
The exhibition features a broad range of works by John, from her early pieces from the 1890s and her muted portraits of young women to her late landscapes. These are displayed alongside works by artists whom John was associated with, such as Édouard Vuillard, James McNeill Whistler and Walter Sickert, as well as her female contemporaries Mary Constance Lloyd and Ursula Tyrwhitt, thus challenging John’s reputation as a withdrawn artist cut off from the life and art of her times.
On Thursday, 25th May, Dr Alicia Foster will give a talk on the life and work of Gwen John and will be signing her new book, Gwen John, Art and Life in London and Paris. Find out more.
