In Episode Three, Philip Mould and Fiona Bruce will try to prove the authenticity of a charming little landscape believed to be by French artist Alfred Sisley (1839-1899).
Born in Paris to British parents, Sisley was one of the founding members of the Impressionist group having become acquainted with Claude Monet, August Renoir and Frédéric Bazille in Paris in the 1860s during their training at the atelier of Charles Gabriel Gleyre. Of all the Impressionists, Sisley experimented the least, remaining loyal to the Impressionist style throughout his career and seeking to convey in his paintings the mood and sensations produced by the landscape.
The painting in question, bought by Americans Kim and Chuck at auction near Chicago, was turned down by the authentication committee nearly ten years ago. Will Philip and Fiona find new evidence that could help change the experts’ minds?
