What to see this month
Winslow Homer: Force of Nature
10 September 2022 – 8 January 2023
In Series One of Fake or Fortune? (2011) Fiona Bruce and Philip Mould investigated the provenance of a painting by one of America's most important 19th century artists, Winslow Homer (1836–1910). This month, The National Gallery, London, will be presenting the first ever exhibition in the UK dedicated to this artist.
The paintings and watercolours on display span over 40 years of Homer’s career, which encompassed important historical moments such as the American Civil War and the abolition of slavery. The works touch on issues of war, race, and the forces of nature.
Co-organised with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, ‘Winslow Homer: Force of Nature’ is part of a programme of exhibitions that seeks to present major American artists to UK and European audiences.
Where: The National Gallery, London.
When: from 10 September 2022 until 8 January 2023.
Tickets: £12, tickets available online.
Lucian Freud: The Painter and His Family
6 July 2022 – 29 January 2023
In celebration of the centenary year of painter Lucian Freud (1922-2011) – Sir Cedric Morris’ star pupil – the Freud Museum has staged its first exhibition of the British artist.
Under the Freudian title ‘The Painter and His Family’, the exhibition delves into Lucian Freud’s childhood, friends and family through photographs, letters, paintings, and drawings drawn from galleries, private collections, and the artist’s relatives.
‘The Painter and His Family’ will also coincide with an exhibition dedicated to Lucian Freud’s paintings of plants and gardens opening next month at the Garden Museum, where major efforts are being made to revive Benton End, the house where Sir Cedric Morris lived and founded the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing.
Where: The Freud Museum, London.
When: until 29th January 2023.
Tickets: £14, tickets available online.
The bold, large-scale paintings of British contemporary artist Jadé Fadojutimi (b. 1993) will be taking over The Hepworth Wakefield this coming month. Jadé combines abstract and figurative forms with vivid colours, and is described by Andrew Bonacina, Chief Curator of the exhibition, as ‘one of the most dynamic and innovative painters of her generation with a maturity of language that far surpasses her young age.’
The exhibition encourages visitors to also explore the Hepworth Wakefield’s collection of modern British art and find connections between Jadé’s works and the modernists that came before her.
You can view the Modern British collection at Philip Mould & Co on the website.
Where: The Hepworth Wakefield, West Yorkshire.
When: from 16 September 2022 until 19 March 2023.
Tickets: £12, tickets available online.
