From Wednesday 18th April Philip Mould & Company will be delighted to welcome you to the gallery to explore the life and travels in art of one of Britain’s most significant artist plantsmen, Sir Cedric Lockwood Morris (1889-1982). Today Morris is perhaps best known for his exquisitely rich body of flower paintings that compliment a life spent dedicated to the study, collection and cultivation of rare and exotic species of flora.
When it came to plants, his insatiable curiosity fuelled another aspect of his life that greatly impacted his artistic output; travel. Morris was a relentless traveller who journeyed extensively throughout his life from his first trip abroad to Canada in 1909 at the age of 19, to Paris, Spain, Portugal, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, The Canary Islands, Mexico, Libya, St Helena and Turkey in 1971 on one of his final trips.
Agaete, Gran Canaria (1955)
Cedric Morris: Beyond the Garden Wall is the first exhibition of Morris’s work that considers the significance travel had for an artist whose career spanned over sixty years of the most decisive turning points in the development of Modern British painting.
In celebration of this multifaceted man, Philip Mould & Company are exhibiting up to forty of Morris’s works and have sponsored and loaned works to a concurrent exhibition to be held at the Garden Museum in Lambeth entitled Cedric Morris: Artist Plantsman which will showcase some of the artist’s most striking flower paintings. The two exhibitions together represent the largest combined display of Cedric Morris paintings since the extensive retrospective held at the Tate in 1984.
Cedric Morris: Beyond the Garden Wall runs from 18 April - 20 July 2018
Opening times: 09:30 - 18:00 - Monday - Friday
