The Life and Works of Sir Oswald Birley MC

Tue Oct 3, 2017

Self-Portrait in profile, 1920, by Sir Oswald Birley MC - photographed by Simon Bevan

Sir Oswald Birley MC (1880-1952), the subject of our current exhibition Power & Beauty, was the 'go-to' portraitist of the first half of the twentieth century. As such, Birley's story weaves amongst the most intriguing and powerful figures of his day: from Churchill to Gandhi, the British royal family to the King of Thailand, and Lady Lavery to Barbara Hutton.

We are delighted to publish two of the catalogue essays online, including The Life and Portraiture of Sir Oswald Birley MC by the curator Dr Jonathan Black, and Sir Oswald Birley MC: the Off-Duty Works by Philip Mould & Co. director Lawrence Hendra. Both essays are available online here.

A hard copy of the full exhibition catalogue is also available to purchase from the gallery (£10 plus postage & packaging). Please call or email the gallery to order (contact details at the bottom of the page).
