Discovery: The Earliest known Portrait of an English Artisan?

Tue Mar 29, 2016

Philip Mould & Co. are pleased to announce an exciting new discovery. Several months ago we acquired an intriguing early English portrait in a minor Italian auction where it was catalogued as a portrait of an unknown gentleman. Our research however soon established that it was in fact a lost portrait of the early English mason Ralph Symons, who is best known for the construction and redesign of a number of colleges in Cambridge.[1]

Portraits of early English artisans are incredibly rare and the significance of this discovery has attracted the attention of the national press, with an article in the Financial Times.

The full catalogue details are available here.

[1] Name variously spelt Symons, Symonds or Symondes.
