Charles Dickens Lectures: Claire Tomalin on Dickens' Life

Thu Jan 17, 2019

For those of you who were unable to obtain tickets for our sell-out Dickens Lecture Series, you can find the second instalment of the lectures below which took place at the gallery on Tuesday 15th January 2019. We were fortunate enough to have as our guest, the esteemed author, biographer and researcher, Claire Tomalin, whose book 'Charles Dickens: A Life' is widely considered to be the most comprehensive account of Dickens to emerge in recent years.

Watch Philip Mould in conversation with Claire here as they discuss Dickens' life around 1843, the year in which he was painted by Margaret Gillies, along with the author's tireless support of social reforms and his dedication to help alleviate the plights of the poorest in Victorian society. Claire offers a unique and thorough perspective on Dickens' output beyond his novels.
