Exhibition: "'Tom will be a genius" - New Landscapes by the Young Thomas Gainsborough'

Sun Jul 5, 2009

In 2009 Philip Mould & Co held an exhibition exploring the distinguished and lesser-known works from Gainsborough's mid teens. The journey began when Philip found the missing fragment of what was then considered to be one of his earliest portraits of two children, which now hangs with its other half at Gainsborough's House. More discoveries followed and a new framework for understanding Gainsborough's early biography became possible. Gainsborough was previously considered to have disappeared to London in 1740 for eight years, but he in fact pursued a highly productive career that straddled Sudbury, Ipswich and London.
