Frieze Masters
15 — 19 October 2025 | Regent's Park, London
At Frieze Masters 2025, Philip Mould & Company will present a group of works which help broaden our understanding of British art across gender, geography, and technique.
We will explore the porous boundaries of British art, highlighting figures whose lives and careers crossed cultures, revealing the fluid and international nature of British artistic identity. Amongst other highlights, we will showcase works by British artists painted in India and a pair of paintings by Spoilum, a western-influenced portraitist working in Canton in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Another work by the itinerant artist John Dempsey, painted in Bristol in 1840, portrays four impeccably dressed Bengali men and stands as a rare early depiction of Asian men in British art.
A central focus of our presentation is British women artists spanning four centuries. We will be showing works by both Joan Carlile and Mary Beale – the two leading women artists of the 17th century, with the 18th century represented by Maria Spilsbury and Adriana Verelst, whose name has only recently come to light (she was previously thought to have been called Maria). Important works by Margaret Carpenter and Sarah Biffin will lead the 19th century display with Vanessa Bell and Jessica Dismorr representing the Modernist era.
Together, these themes reflect our wider commitment to exploring new angles in British art history and revealing the depth and breadth of Britain’s artistic legacy.
