“I once saw him dancing about on a drawing which had been under the tap and which he had put between sheets of blotting paper on the floor” (Daphne Pollen (née Baring), 1971) Ambrose McEvoy’s eccentric working methods fascinated many of his glamourous subjects. He was particularly imaginative when working in his favourite medium – watercolour. Smaller in scale and more briskly painted, McEvoy’s works on paper are amongst the purest distillations of his artistic thought processes and are typically more spontaneous and instinctive than his larger oil paintings. Dancing on Drawings brings together a selection of works on paper by Ambrose McEvoy. This exhibition of sketches, studies and finished portraits follows our highly successful retrospective of the artist's work; Divine People: The Art of Ambrose McEvoy, which had over two thousand visitors. The present collection is on display at the gallery from Friday 14 February until Friday 13 March 2020. It constitutes a curated selection of rarities and innovative works on paper offered directly from the McEvoy Estate. All works are for sale with prices ranging between £3,000 and £20,000.
