Painted during the last five years of the eighteenth century, the sitter is shown wearing a white turban over her hair, which is powdered with the longer locks tucked under.

This portrait, by the Irish artist George Place, shows a fashionable young woman in a park landscape – perhaps her own grounds. Painted during the last five years of the eighteenth century, the sitter is shown wearing a white turban over her hair, which is powdered with the longer locks tucked under. Her provocative neckline is softened by the inclusion of a fichu across her shoulders...

Place was born in Dublin, where he began his formal training at the Dublin Society Schools in 1775. After starting his independent practice as a miniature painter in his home city, he moved to London, where he exhibited at the R.A. 1791-1797. This portrait was probably painted just prior to his departure to India, where he worked from 1798 in Lucknow. He received many important commissions in India from the Nawab but few of his paintings and drawings survived the Indian Mutiny. He died in Lucknow in 1805.
