Lord Bearsted was Chairman of the Trustees of the National Gallery (1936) and a Trustee of the Tate Gallery (1938). His philanthropic activity in the art world included generous donations to the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford and he became chairman of the Whitechapel Art Gallery shortly before his death in 1948.
