In Arrábida, Portugal, Morris conveys the very essence of the place itself: the gentle lapping of the surf as it makes contact with the surrounding cliffs, the light as it falls upon the stuccoed building in the left foreground and the trail of the cove as it bends towards the North Atlantic Ocean...

In Arrábida, Portugal, Morris changes the vantage point from Portinho da Arrábida, (No 2) (1956) so that the viewer is looking south and out towards the Atlantic Ocean. The position from which Morris painted the present work can be seen in earlier works depicting the bay. Within the hills of Portinho da Arrábida there is a small village from which Morris most likely painted this work, elevated at a slightly higher level than seen in the alternative view. [1]


Although the precise date of the present work is not currently known, the colour scheme and simplified forms are strikingly similar to those seen in a work Morris executed while in Tenerife, Canary Islands, in 1955 (previously with Philip Mould & Company). In addition, Morris is known to have visited the bay in 1956, painting at least two more alternative views of the spot. It is therefore likely that Morris painted the present work in January 1956, when he painted Portinho da Arrábida. The corresponding letter Morris wrote to Lett at the time further evidences this (Tate Gallery Archive: 8317.1.4.191).

In Arrábida, Portugal, Morris conveys the very essence of the place itself: the gentle lapping of the surf as it makes contact with the surrounding cliffs, the light as it falls upon the stuccoed building in the left foreground and the trail of the cove as it bends towards the North Atlantic Ocean. Morris captures all of this in a moment of rapid execution, investing the work with the quality similar to the impressionist method of painting en plein air. An outdoorsman by nature, Morris’s painting of the Portuguese coastline perfectly synthesises his proficiency when painting landscapes.
